Framing the World

Willoquet-Maricondi, Paula. Framing the World: Explorations in Ecocriticism and Film.

This text is so essential to this overall project because it rests as the mitochondrion that catapults this idea of the new media documentary as a genre, which not only aesthetically, visually, and narratively competes but also superimposes change within the communities and environments it represents. This is a tremendous task and opportunity that, quite frankly, texts by themselves have never really been able to do… “to challenge and broaden the audiences’ perception and understanding of the complex world that surrounds us…” Indeed, books do this if we read them, but we still have to react on our own. Sometimes, the reader does not know how to react in order to produce a meaningful outcome. So, a frustrated reader who just read an awesome book can do nothing about it. This also happens with various media. However, with the new media documentary, one is able to contribute to the cause by posting their own information or testimonials, hosting a viewing of the documentary with an in-depth discussion, and becoming a part of a community that chooses to institute change. This is just the beginning for new media documentaries and what they are able to do within the genre and with new media.
